WELCOME TO THE PACIFIC INSTITUTE WEB SITE

The Pacific Institute for Advanced Study was the world's first truly global, cyber-based research and development organization.  The Organization consists of a worldwide network of researchers who work together through the INTERNET in order to solve difficult problems of vital significance to the advancement of science and technology.  The research activities of the Institute are highly interdisciplinary in scope.  There are numerous Research Groups currently active within the Pacific Institute Research & Development Network and descriptions of their various activities can be accessed from the Institute home page.  The Pacific Institute for Advanced Study was founded by Dr. Paul D. Tinari Ph.D., M.Ed., P.Eng. in 1990. Dr. Tinari is still the director and is a senior researcher at the Institute.

The individual solutions generated to the various sub-problems are then generated and transmitted back to the head office for final assembly and senior review.  The solution to the complete problem is then relayed back to the client.  Each researcher is paid on a "per-project" basis for the work completed for the Institute. This approach to the solution of problems has resulted in sharply reduced costs for clients as compared to traditional research organizations engaged in similar activities.

The Pacific Institute provides scientific, engineering and environmental services to a growing international customer base.  The Institute's services span theoretical and applied research, engineering design, new product and process development, fluid mechanics, CFD, prototype development and testing, model testing, environmental physics and problem solving consulting.

Since 1990 the Pacific Institute has served industry and governments both in Canada and abroad, always operating on the leading edge of technology.  Sophisticated theoretical, scientific, mathematical and experimental methods are used to attack and solve the most difficult problems.  Researchers operating within the Institute's network have international reputations for their skill, innovativeness and creativity in the solution of problems.

The Pacific Institute serves many diverse industries including but not limited to:

* Processing
* Aerospace
* Alternate energy
* Mining
* Environmental
* Third World Development
* Defense
* Petro-chemical
* Energy
* Pulp & paper

The Pacific Institute is free of the constraints that limit traditionally organized industries and research organizations. The effectiveness of the Institute is amplified by its great strength in a synergistic set of disciplines including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, multiphase flow, computational fluid mechanics and environmental bio-physics. The Institute was originally organized to harness the talents of a global network of exceptionally creative, high-technology scientists and engineers without removing them from their home environments.  The networking approach to the solution of problems allows enormous problem solving ability to rapidly, efficiently and economically come to bear on any particular problem, maximizing customer responsiveness and fostering a results-oriented approach.  Senior staff members are leaders in their respective fields.

The Pacific Institute for Advanced Study was founded on the principle of quality service, excellence in research and the greatest possible cost effectiveness.  The Institute values its client relationships and strives to develop long term partnerships with clients. The Institute's knows that its only business is to serve its clients whether providing advice, designs, research results or product development support.

The Pacific Institute Philosophy

The Pacific Institute was built on strong scientific foundations and with the recognition that conventional scientific or engineering approaches are no longer sufficient to meet modern demands.  The Institute maintains its focus on the ultimate needs of its clients and constantly seeks new ways of bridging the gulf between scientific and engineering knowledge and the profitable utilization of technology.

The unique organization of the Institute fosters market sensitive innovation.  The design strategy and the ability to bridge the gap between the latest developments of science and the 'real' world of the client are highly developed.  The Institute works closely with clients so that solution development proceeds rapidly from the conceptual stage through to prototype solution testing to the formulation of the final solution or product. The Institute provides its clients objective viewpoints, new innovative and creative ideas and sound technology to solve the clients' problems.

The approach used by the Institute emphasizes the development of a clear perception of all the critical parameters of a problem.  Not only are the technical dimensions of the problem considered but also the client's management objectives, the needs of the marketplace and the real constraints imposed by time and money.  The aim is to acquire an understanding of the essence of a problem in simple formulations amenable to empirical verification.  Some projects require the development of sophisticated equipment and leading edge computerized data gathering systems, while the perception of others can be clarified by use of simple strips of bamboo and rubber bands.

The usual end products of the Institute's work include analytical techniques and results, experimental data, engineering, scientific and computer models, design guidelines, numerical solutions, experimental prototypes and computer software.  The Institute's links with global information sources on the Internet allow its researchers to become familiar with the latest technological developments in industry long before traditional research organizations are even aware of them.  The Institute is able to bring a unique perspective to its work while maintaining sensitivity in the confidential nature of the work it does for clients.  The Institute takes great pride in accuracy and conciseness of all of its technical reports and in its continuing client support.  Recommendations are always action-oriented and realistic.

Institute staff are constantly called upon to take on varied roles in their client relationships.  These can range from temporary advisor, co-worker on a project team, or to taking on full responsibility for the success of an entire research effort.  All services are flexibly tailored to fit the particular staffing situation.  Problem definition, scoping calculations and preliminary experiments may be undertaken early in one project while audits can be carried out for another project that has almost been completed. For time critical work, the Pacific Institute can almost instantly amplify the staff committed to a given project in order to provide a fresh perspective to deal with very recalcitrant problems that have until then resisted conventional solution. A significant portion of the Institute's work consists of "rescuing" projects from other groups that have for whatever reason come to the realization that they are unable to complete the work for the client.  This is especially true of the Institute's contaminated site remediation services.

Regardless of the nature of the involvement, the director of the Institute is personally responsible to the client for technical, financial and administrative control of the project.  On large, highly complex and multifaceted projects, an independent Project Review Committee is established to ensure that the client's needs are met with technical excellence and within budget and schedule restrictions.

The Pacific Institute's services are intimately linked with the diverse capabilities of its global network of researchers.  This networked, person-oriented philosophy and the unrelenting efforts to be the cutting edge of technology development have resulted in the development of an unusual by unified mix of services.  Because of the breath of the Institute's experience, senior staff have an understanding of the needs of clients and bring to bear the most appropriate resources, technologies and tools.

FACILITIES & SUPPORT SERVICES

The Pacific Institute for Advanced Study is located in Coquitlam, British Columbia overlooking the Coastal Mountain Range of the Canadian West Coast.  The Institute, as a completely cyber-based research organization, sits on the hub of a large network of researchers and technical experts who are on instant call to solve problems in their respective areas of expertise.  Maintaining such a vast spectrum of expertise in one location by "traditionally structured" research organizations would be prohibitively expensive and difficult.  Moreover, the institute maintains no 'full-time' laboratories to conduct its research.  Rather for each specific project, the most suitable research and development facilities are sought and leased to the duration of the project.  This approach leads to a dramatic reduction in overhead costs and yields the best possible facilities possible that are optimized to the needs of each project.  Recent R&D efforts have taken place in locations ranging from the world renown von Karman Institute for Fluid Mechanics in near Brussels, Belgium, the Oregon Graduate Institute in Beaverton, Oregon, to PowerTech Laboratories located in Surrey, British Columbia.

Quick-test laboratories are available for small to moderate sized experiments that require rapid facility set-up for the visualization of phenomena.   Access to machine shops and unique micromachining facilities allow the Institute to implement designs and perform tests quickly and effectively.  Specialized instrumentation and probes and visualization equipment can be rapidly sourced for virtually any type of project.

In-house facilities include CAD systems, advanced computer modeling and graphics facilities, satellite communications, an extensive paper and electronic technical library and most importantly, extensive intelligent databases that allow information to be rapidly sourced on virtually any topic.

The Pacific Institute maintains all client-proprietary transmittals, documents and data in the strictest confidence.  The Institute's record of due diligence in the control of proprietary information is known as among the best in the business.
